 Sunnyvale Cool Green Letter
October 19, 2009

City election home stretch. Our City Council election is November 3. Local school district issues are also on the ballot. The Council Candidate Forums have drawn to a close.  However, you can still view three of the forums and the candidates' statements  on-line at http://sunnyvaleca.granicus.com/ViewSearchResults.php?view_id=2&keywords=candidate%20forums and listen to the Chamber of Commerce interviews on www.RadioSunnyvale.com

While SunnyvaleCool is non-partisan and takes no group position on council races, it is likely of interest to readers of the Green Letter that Chris Moylan and Jim Griffith are the two candidates endorsed by our parent organization, The Sierra Club, and the League of Conservation Voters.

Information-packed Council meeting.  Interested in getting more up-to-speed on City issues? October 6 was an especially informative City Council meeting with presentations by Elaine Alquist (State Senator), Polly Bove (FUHSD Superintendent), the City Manager, and the Sunnyvale staff. Polly Bove discussed the upcoming bond election.  Staff responded to recent citizen questions. Mr. Luebbers explained how staff quickly created and implemented SunnyvaleWorks to take advantage of federal stimulus money and low prices during this recession to rebuild some of our infrastructure ahead of schedule, save money and put local people to work. Staff  also presented a new and more holistic method of code enforcement.  http://sunnyvaleca.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=395

International Day of Climate Action, this Saturday, October 24.  As the December UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen approaches, 350.org and tchtchtch.org, two international climate change networks, are working together to demonstrate support for adopting an ambitious, fair and binding climate treaty. Partnering with these groups are a wide array of respected international organizations including CARE, Oxfam, Amnesty International, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, NRDC, Union of Concerned Scientists, the International Federation of the Red Cross, the World Council of Churches, the Rainforest Action Network, 1Sky, and the Global Humanitarian Forum.

Thousands of events are scheduled worldwide on Saturday in support of a strong international climate agreement.  Please consider lending your support to this important movement.  Events are listed at 350.org.  Many local activities are planned, including one here in Sunnyvale, planned by Fremont High's new environmental club, A.P.E., currently scheduled for Las Palmas Park from 8 to 11:30 AM.  http://www.350.org/node/8880  The future is in our hands.
