An Emerging threat to California's Global Warming Solutions Act
Numerous speakers at last Saturday's Bay Area League Day (a regional League of Women Voters event) called attention to a "concerted effort" to roll back California's progress on climate legislation and called for a major effort to work with communities and with legislators to prevent suspending AB32, the Global Warming Solutions Act.
It seems to me that since California leads in climate legislation, AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act, is a prominent target for those with vested interests in the status quo: the fossil fuel industry and its allies. The nation looks to California for climate leadership to prove that it is possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In my opinion, the postponing implementation of AB 32 until the economy fully recovers would be a significant and demoralizing setback for the environmental movement, the environment we seek to protect, and our kids. But there is every indication that rolling back AB 32 would also be a blow to the very economy the initiative is ostensibly trying to protect. More on that later.
This challenge to AB 32 also presents an opportunity to make the case for AB 32 to the public. Indeed, should the measure make the ballot, it will be essential that we do so.
