Hot Weather Ahead: Beat the Heat and Save Energy

Posted by barbf on Wed, 05/14/2008 - 01:47

Forecasters predict high temperatures throughout Northern and Central California over the next several days. As demand for electricity rises during extended periods of hot weather, voluntary conservation will be an important part of balancing the supply and demand for electricity.
Should the Cal ISO (California Independent System Operator) issue a warning, our more than 3,100 commercial and industrial customers participating in PG&E’s Demand Response program will help to mitigate any strain on the system, but residential customers can also do their part. To beat the heat while saving energy, here are some simple things you can do:
1. Set thermostat to 78 degrees or higher (health permitting) 2. Cool with fans instead of air conditioning 3. Draw the drapes 4. Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances 5. Use large appliances such as dishwashers, washers and dryers after 7 p.m. and avoid using them during peak demand hours between noon and 7 p.m.
